This program runs as a 6-8 week course and can be tailored to any age group. It is an introduction into food, nutrition and cooking through the new food pyramid called MyPlate. MyPlate, developed by the US Department of Agriculture, illustrates the five food groups that are the building blocks for a healthy diet using a familiar image—a place setting for a meal. MyPlate can help prioritize food choices for a well-balanced meal: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and low fat dairy.
During this program, children will learn the basics of the 5 food groups and how to prepare food for themselves. Each session would offer a lesson on nutrition, a fun activity or art project to reinforce the lesson and then some hands-on food prep and eating time. The time spent with food is mostly food tasting, chopping and mixing ingredients when offered in a school environment. More cooking can be incorporated when using a kitchen.
By the end of the program, children will have a better understanding of nutrition, the 5 food groups, how to make healthy food choices and most of all how to begin to cook the foods they love to eat.
This MyPlate Curriculum was developed by Sprouts and has been taught at Greenwood Montessori School to preschool children and Cedar Hill Elementary School as an after school program to different age groups. It can be offered as an in-school or after school program or in any teaching kitchen.
